BUCKEYE-WOLVERINE NIGHT
Located just 45 miles from Ann Arbor, Michigan, but in the state of Ohio, Toledo is a hotbed for the traditional rivalry between the Ohio State University and the University of Michigan. Every November that rivalry is celebrated at Raceway Park's Buckeye - Wolverine Night.
Begun in 1998, Buckeye-Wolverine Night has quickly become Raceway Park's most popular racing evening of the year. Guests receive free admission when they wear their university's colors, and all night long Raceway Park gives away apparel and promotional items from both Ohio State and UM. Of great interest to racing fans is the Buckeye-Wolverine Driver's Challenge, which pits four Ohio drivers against four Michigan reinsmen for $2,000 in contest winnings.
The highlight of the evening is the annual Buckeye-Wolverine Pace, in which the four best pacers from Ohio compete against the four best from Michigan. In 1998, Firm Belief won the event for the Buckeye State; in 1999 Ramses Two took home the honors for the Wolverines; in 2000 CR Raider won the event for the Wolverines; in 2001 Ohio's Cmon Sloopy Hangon won the event and Ohio's Monturo prevailed in 2002. It is noteworthy that in all five cases, the result of the Buckeye-Wolverine Pace predicted the winner of the Ohio State-Michigan football game, which is played on the Saturday following the race.
Raceway Park also gives away tickets to the OSU-Michigan game, which ensures a large crowd of racing fans and football fans alike. The Buckeye-Wolverine Pace for the year 2003 is scheduled for Sunday, November 16th.
